Play-off hopes are still alive in at least one Mustangs camp.
The Mustangs State League Youth Women’s team has one last shot at making the finals on Saturday.
They’ll take on the Hornsby Spiders at the Maitland Federation Centre on Saturday.
A win would level them level with Sutherland and Manly-Warringah in sixth place on the ladder.
Maitland has beaten both those teams this season and Mustangs coach Jim Noud is confident his team should have the edge needed to make the play-offs.
“It goes on a countback then,” Noud said.
“Hopefully it looks like we’ll go through.”
Maitland had a chance to secure a play-off berth last weekend but fell 24 points short against the first-placed Bathurst outfit.
“They jumped at the start,” Noud said.
Saturday’s game against Hornsby is the last game of the regular season for Maitland.
With their hopes of a play-off hinging on victory, Noud expects his team will perform.
“You never take anything for granted but they’re below us on the table,” he said.
“They’re a young team like us and they’re also fit and full of energy.
“We just need to go out and take control of the game.
“We’ve got some good size and some good shooters and we’ve just got play our game and hopefully get the win.”
A win would bode well for the future of Maitland basketball, especially in the women’s ranks.
“The whole club has worked hard this year and I think us making the play-offs would be a good boost for the club,” Noud said.
“It shows that we are getting depth in the club and going forward.
“It’s been a good season so far. We’ve had 10 wins and eight losses. About four or five of those losses have been by single number points.”
