Watson ‘under pressure’ after flatmate’s arrest

27/08/2008 9:21:00 AM
The father of Branxton golfer Brent Watson said his son did not enjoy being at the centre of the scandal over Cronulla Sharks star Greg Bird.

Bird was accused of trying to blame his childhood friend after allegedly glassing his girlfriend in his Cronulla home on Sunday morning.

“He’s worried,” Brent’s father, Mick, told the Mercury yesterday.

“He’s under pressure.”

Watson had been competing in the Foursomes Championships at Bankstown Golf Club when he allegedly had a text message from Bird stating: “Something has happened to Katie; It was an accident. There is blood everywhere in the unit. We have told police it was you. How do you feel about that?”

Watson gave a statement to police on Sunday night.

The Mercury spoke to Brent Watson shortly before he moved to Sydney to further his golf career with the NSW Institute of Sport.

The talented golfer caddied at the British Open this year and planned his own international assault on the fairway during the next year.

Bird pressured his flatmate to take the fall for him after he allegedly glassed his girlfriend in the face, court documents alleged on Monday.

Bird was granted strict conditional bail after spending a night in police custody.

The 24-year-old rugby league international is accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm on his girlfriend, Katie Milligan.

However, Bird has alleged his flatmate Brent Watson was responsible for his girlfriend’s injuries, prompting police to accuse him of lying.

“The accused person ... is actively trying to deceive police by inferring other people were involved in the matter,” prosecutor acting Sergeant Matt Zalunardo told Sutherland Local Court on Monday.

He said it appeared Bird was trying to “pin the offence” on someone else.

Bird has been stood down indefinitely by the Sharks pending further investigation of the alleged assault.

The Mercury was unable to get in contact with Watson yesterday.
